Printed Book, Ebook or Both?

Determining the best path to take for publishing your book is a tricky one to navigate. Do you want to print physical copies of your book? Offer an ebook option exclusively? Or would you like to have both options available? There are so many decisions to be made while trying to get your works out into the world. We’ve narrowed down a few key points to consider while making these decisions.

Printed Book

Printed books have many benefits, the largest one being that readers can carry a physical copy with them. As a  result of this, whenever and wherever they are reading the book other people are exposed to it.

A printed book also allows for the book to be shared with many more people, if you are out of your home you can always carry a physical copy of your book and share it with interested readers. It is also easier for readers to gift your book to a friend!

One con of deciding on a printed book is the upward costs for producing the physical copy. In order to get a cover price that will allow you to reach your ideal market, you may need to go with a print quantity that could make publishing costs difficult. This is something that should be taken into account when you are deciding how much you would like to invest into your book.

EBook

Ebooks provide different opportunities for readers because they can reach different markets of readers. In this digital age, it is important to have options that are compatible with mobile devices as well as personal readers like Kindles.

A benefit of going with only an ebook option is you do not have to manage the overhead costs of producing a physical copy, which also means you don’t need to produce more than one copy at a time, nor provide storage for books anywhere.

If you do decide to go with just an ebook, a drawback is that it is not as accessible for all audiences and could limit your reach of how many people get the opportunity to read your book.

Both

Going with a printed book and an ebook obviously gives you the best of both worlds and allows you to reach many different readers. It is best to be prepared for a longer process if you are planning to sell both options, all book publishing takes time but picking the best option for your audience is essential and can help produce the results you are hoping to see!

Some books don’t lend themselves to distribution as an ebook, so an evaluation of your book’s fit for that medium is critical as you make this decision
